Edwin Adams on the 1911 census

Postby phsvm » Thu Aug 27, 2015 7:28 am

I'm trying to find Edwin on the 1911 census but without any luck.

He was born, illegitimately, in 1883 in Uxbridge to Rachael Adams. She subsequently married Caleb Hatto and is with the two of them, along with various step and half siblings on the 1891 and 1901 census living in Chilton, Berkshire.

He then disappears and I can't find him on the 1911 census. Can anyone have better luck than me?

Many thanks.

What about the Edward Adams, 29, Colliery Labourer, born Uxbridge, boarding with the Holes family in Pyle, Glamorgan?
Have seen people called Edwin recorded as Edward many times

Did he emigrate? There's an Edwin Adams travelling in 1910 from Southampton to New York, a single man, unfortunately no age given, but there are other Edwin Adams' emigrating to Canada, one b1883, one b1885.

I'd be surprised if he was the one is Glamorgan as he doesn't appear to have had any connections with South Wales - his mother was from Chilton, the village he was brought up in, but I'll definitely check it out.

He appears on our village Roll of Honour as a solider who fought in WW1 (although he survived) so again I think it unlikely he had gone abroad, but again I'll check those two out as well.

Many thanks for both of those suggestions. It's always so helpful to have someone else look outside the box and make suggestions I'd never have come up with.

Was he born 7 Nov 1882 and served in the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserves?

Alan and Ian. Thank you both for these leads.

I'd seen the death and thought it could well be him. The fact that it has a connection with Didcot which is only about 4 miles from the village of Chilton does add more weight to argument that it is him.

I don't have his actual dob but it was registered in the 4th quarter of the year so again this one would fit with the Edwin you found Alan although it's hard to get further from the sea than the Berkshire Downs (Chilton) so it would be a rather strange choice to enter the Navy. That said one of the men I'm researching was on the first ship in the Navy to be sunk by enemy action in WW1.

Both worth looking into though

Edwell John Lennox Talbot's mother was Florence Harriet Hatto, so there is a family connection to the probate that Ianbee found.

If Edwin was in the Navy, that might be why we can't find him in 1911 as he could have been on the high seas?

There is this record on Ancestry, albeit with the wrong birth year, but is does say he was from Uxbridge:

Name:
Edwin Adams

7 Nov 1880

Birth Place:
Mxbridge Middx

Service number:

First Service Date:
6 May 1902

First Ship Served On:
Duke Of Welln II

Last Service Date:
19 Sep 1902

Last Ship Served On:
D Of Wellington II

Hannah was Edwin's half sister so I think I can be fairly confident that this is him. I've now managed to track down Hannah's grandson who lives locally so I'm going to try and make contact with him and see if he can fill in any of the gaps.

I shall still follow up the other possible leads just in case he can't help however so many thanks to everyone who helped find Edwin.

Whoops! I should have said 'Florence' was his half sister, not 'Hannah'!
