Stoker - though what he stoked, ships or boiler house furnaces, I dunno.

I have two instances of a stoker in my ancestry. One was in the Royal Navy in the early days of steam as a stoker on a battleship. The other was a stoker in the merchant service. All I know is that they would be working on keeping the boilers going on the steam engines. Is there any other clue on the certificate or other certificates that could tell you more about the overall occupation? Obviously there are boilers too on trains, in factories and so on - anywhere steam power was needed.

Certainly in later years, the term stoker would not be used on the railways in the UK - he'd be a fireman. But I wouldn't care to say when that change completed.

If that address on the certificate is Movers Lane, then the only one I know of was / is in Barking
And not far from the Beckton Gas Works. Plenty of stokers worked there! So that might be a possibility.

My own grandfather was a Stoker in Merchant Navy, then took a land job as Stoker at Limehouse Power Station. As previously mentioned, there were plenty of industrial boilers around that required stokers!
