Lists of Canal workers ?

Sun Jul 05, 2015 8:20 am

One of my relatives worked as a lock keeper - fell in and drowned !
Are there any lists/records of Canal workers ?

Dear Chris, the summer 2014 edition of WDYTYA? Magazine had a special feature on tracing canal ancestors. Sorry that I don't have my copy any more, but others may do, and it can be downloaded via iTunes I think.

here are the websites mentioned in the article

Under Record Round Up - The National Archives at Kew holds most surviving canal company records Some canal companies were taken over by Rail Firms nationalarchives.gov.uk/documents/research-guides/railway-staff.pdf
Waterways Archive (Canal River Trust), Ellesmere Port
British Waterways Board (BWB)
Early Boat Registers - only a few survive check Quater sessions in localarchives
Eureka Partnership - eurekapartnership.com/page16.htm
Virtual Waterways Archive - virtualwaterways.co.uk/Home.html

Hopefully these will give you some ideas of where to look

If you want to prioritise that lot, then I'd suggest that you can ignore all the stuff about boats because all the documents about boats will be about the boats themselves and/ or their crew. Lock keepers were a different kettle of fish.
