Scottish soldier uniform and records J.Peebles b1850 Glasgow

Postby emmapierce » Mon Jun 22, 2015 8:20 pm

James Watson Peebles born 1850 in Glasgow, died 9 Nov 1933 Scotston, Kincardineshire, Scotland.
Married Mary Gillespie b1851 in 11 July 1872

Mother Mary Watson b1827, Father Hugh D Peebles b1830

Have a photograph of him in Scottish uniform - does anyone have any information on this? I can't find any military records for him on Ancestry, does anyone have any recommendations?

Many thanks

I cannot see for sure from the picture but I am not so sure this is a military uniform. I am no expert on scottish cap badges or anything, and I am wondering if this was just a traditional dress? Possibly a clan tartan and badge. Maybe.

I'm not sure if he is a serving member of a highland regiment or not. However, I have a book with pictures of highland soldier regiments in Queen Victoria's reign. The sporran differentiates regiments. The sporran of white horsehair and with two black tassels indicates it is for the Seaforth Highlanders. This might help you a little, I hope. Without colour, it is difficult to see any more.

What was shown as his occupation on his marriage certificate and on the birth certificates of his children?

The National Archives does not have any relevant records, but the 1871 Census should indicate whether he was in the Army or similar.

From his children's birth certificates and the 1871 census his occupation is listed as Blacksmith.
