WW1 uniform & information help! W.Jenner Camberwell London

Postby emmapierce » Fri Jun 12, 2015 8:07 am

Hello!

I am looking for information on my great great grandad, William George Jenner. b (est) 1884 18 Samford Street, Marylebone and died 1955 Shoreditch london. Mother and father William Jenner and Annie Jenner (some discrepancy about mother maiden name)
Married in June 1917 to Matilda Ann Goodman - address listed as - 1 Harling Cottages, Harling Street, Camberwell

Attached is a photograph i was sent (bad quality photograph of a photograph copy!)

Does anyone know any information on the uniform, or the cap badge? I cant quite make it out myself.

There is a WW1 military record for a William George Jenner, but the address given on the paper work is not near where my 2x grandfather would have lived. Other than the photograph and the given information, i can't seem to find any military records for him.

Hi I have looked on FMP for a service record and there are 2 for William George Jenner, the first enlists on 10.04.1917 and gives his father as George Jenner of 1st Park Alms Houses, Southampton Road, Hampstead, a bit of a distance from Marylebone and wrong fathers name.

The second b 1883 enlists on 31 05 1901 in the 6th Middlesex Regt and states on the papers that he is from Marylebone, Middx and his address at the time was 14 Little Edward Street, St Pancras and that his master was Mr Matthews of Western Wharf Regents Park Basin, this William was a labourer aged 17 years 10 months at the time of enlistment and on the 10.09.1901 he moved to the Dorsetshire Regt.

The second could be your man and maybe if you could find uniforms of these two regiments you maybe able to match them to your man.

If you do not have a subscription to FMP please let me know and I will happily download the documents for you.

Hope this helps

Ancestry's Medal Index Cards show 6 soldiers named William (or Wm) G Jenner.

So far as I can see, the uniform shows no distinguishing characteristics other than the cap badge. That badge is not at all clear (as you realise!) - it just might be Royal Engineers and there is a Sapper William G Jenner of the RE in that 6.

It's not impossible someone with specialised knowledge might see something else in the murk, but frankly I think you need to look for other evidence such as (my favourite, if they survive) Absent Voters Lists.

Hi thank you for this information, I shall try to trace the absent voters list for the area he lived in - possibly Southwark records, thank you!

I am no expert at all on militaria, just a keen collector and enthusiast, so I may not be correct at all. I do not think the cap badge is the middlesex regt or the dorset regt. The profile does not look right. It does look more "star" like, could well be engineers but also could be others, for example the Army Service Corps or The Border Regiment, these have a much more similar profile. Any chance of getting a better quality copy of the picture?
