Problems with the forum – resolved

Postby Jon Bauckham » Tue Jun 02, 2015 9:59 am

Hello everyone,

Problems with logging on earlier today (2 June) now appear to have been fixed. However, if you're still experiencing difficulties just send an email to the address in my signature below.

I've also asked our digital team to take a look at our spam prevention system, as we've seen an increase in the number of 'dodgy' posts recently. Please be assured that we're doing everything we can to limit them.

Thanks for your patience,
Jon

Jon
I wrote a spam notification, thinking that the mobilecasino which is suddenly appearing everywhere is a spam.
It appears now that WDYTYA have chosen that their forum be sponsored by gambling advertisers.
As I have a very personal aversion to both gambling (and advertising constantly in my face), and this supports both, I will no longer be able to be an active contributor on this forum via my ipad.
Very sad to do this as I've gained a great deal of very useful help on this forum.
It will be my loss as I have a lot more queries I would like help with, but must firstly be true to myself. I simply can't contribute to gambling income in any way shape or form because of the damage and grief it brings to gamblers and their families.
I do understand that sponsorship money is income to the Forum owners/producers to keep the Forum running. Hopefully this particular sponsorship deal will not last forever.
Susan

I hadn't noticed this Susan -(don't access the forum on a mobile device)- but will look out for same. If true, I also am horrified and hope that immediatemedia will rethink their policies. Also dead against gambling - don't even buy raffle tickets!!

Hi Susan,

Really sorry to hear about that and totally respect your decision. I wasn't aware of this, as I tend to use the desktop version of the forum rather than the iPad version.

However, I personally don't think our ads team will have negotiated a deal with a gambling website themselves. Basically, the Forum App is hosted on a third-party platform called Tapatalk (used by lots of other online forums) which the company pay a fee to use. I therefore think the ads you see on the app are those sold by Tapatalk rather than Immediate Media, if that makes sense.

Having said that, I will check this with our ads and digital teams. If it turns out that they have negotiated such a deal, I will raise your issue and ask them to reconsider.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Best regards,
Jon

Thank you Jon, your explanatory reply is much appreciated.
And Sylvia too for your response.
I find that I can access the forum on my very elderly itouch, which doesn't show any sponsorship adds, but at the same time my reply is still showing on the ipad fully sponsored version.
I will check in on the pad from time to time to see if they're still running.

You may find that even Tapatalk don't buy specific advertising but just provide a paid for slot into which advertising applications insert the ads that they have sold space for. And you may also find - if it's the same sort of thing as you may see anywhere on the Internet - that the ads vary from person to person, with the goal being to deliver targeted ads. Clearly the targeting is not working for some people!

Advertising is an absolute pain but no advertising means no Google etc.

Problems with the forum – resolved

I can accept that advertising is an accepted evil ... after all what on earth would we do with no internet. Lol.
But. Some ads are definitely on the flakey side, and the flakiness can all too easily rub off on the reputation of a legitimate site where they appear, which is definitely not a positive for the site owners. As well the flakier the ads are, the more likelihood of site visitors getting contaminated either by accidental or deliberate viruses.
Up until the current gambling ads started to appear, this forum was sponsored by actual WDYTYA related ads. And they only appeared at the bottom of posts, unlike this mobile casino which appears to be specifically targeting ipad users, not only in posts but in between categories as well. Right in your face all the time. Unpleasant. And I have made the mistake of replying on my ipad, so here it is again!

Only just spotted this. Whilst I don't gamble a lot (occasional charity raffles and the odd scratch card) I am well aware of the damage it can cause. Having said that, for the last few days I haven't actually seen any ads on my iPad-just blank spaces.

How interesting. At the present time I don't get any adverts on the app, either with my iPad or phone. Instead there are just white spaces (sometimes saying "sponsored"). As I certainly used to see adverts I'm wondering whether my privacy / parental guidance settings are blocking these particular ads. Not sure I know how I made the settings ...
