Army pensioner, born 1831 - which war/regiment?

Postby RozBanks » Mon Jun 01, 2015 8:26 am

My ancestor Philip Clarke born 1831 in Antrim, N.I. is stated as an army pensioner on census form. Help needed to find which military service and what wars he may have served in. He settled in Liverpool with his brothers Patrick and John. Lived with his widow brother John and niece Annie in 1871 in Eldon Street Liverpool.

If you are talking about the 1871 census it says 'Pensioner' and not 'Army Pensioner' and I have been unable to trace any Army record for him.

Hi

Thanks for the reply, it does say army pensioner on the 1881 census on fmp website., piece 3672, folio 102 page 31. Today I managed to find an entry for Loyal North Lancs Regiment in 1849, but it looks like this was only a short service and would probably not entitle him to an army pension, so I am not too sure. I also found something for the Indian Mutiny, but I am unable to find the info again.

This is the Indian Mutiny Medal Roll reference from Findmypast:
First name(s) Philip
Last name Clarke
Service number 185
Rank Private
Unit or regiment 34th Foot (Cumberland)
Notes Enlisted 16 November 1857 at Belfast aged 20 & 9m. b. Drumgoon(?), a labourer by trade
Record set Indian Mutiny Medal Roll 1857-1859

The above record has the attraction of Philip being from Northern Ireland, but his age means that he was born in 1837 not 1831.

The same man is still in India in 1861:
First name Philip
Last name Clarke
Service number 185
Rank Private
Unit or Regiment 34th Foot (Cumberland)
Regiment stationed at Fyzabad East Indies
Year 1861
National Archives reference WO12 / 4926
unfortunately, although not in India, by 1871, this man is still shown as serving in the 34th foot.

on the other hand there is another of the same name in a different regiment in 1861:
First name Philip
Last name Clarke
Service number 2595
Rank Private
Unit or Regiment 47th Foot (Lancashire)
Regiment stationed at Dover Dublin & Ship
Year 1861
National Archives reference WO12 / 5933

Also noted this service record, which I think you referred to:
First name(s) PHILIP
Last name CLARK
Birth year 1830
Birth parish CLONES
Birth county MONAGHAN
Birth country IRELAND
Service number 2595
Rank PRIVATE
Regiment Loyal North Lancashire Regiment - 47th & 81st Foot
Document Type Discharge
Attestation year 1849
He was discharged in 1868 after his 2nd period of engagement. Noted he served in Crimea and West Indies (among other places) and had been wounded. His service was reckoned at almost 21 years - enough for a pension I think! However - this man was born in Monaghan, not Antrim as you claim for your man.

Thanks for all the useful info. I know from the 1871 and 1881 census he is living with his brother John in Liverpool, so maybe after his discharge in 1868, and having no close family left in Ireland he has joined his brothers John and Patrick in Liverpool. I did see an entry for Antrim as place of birth somewhere, although he may have been living in Monaghan when he enlisted and stated this was his birth place.
I think my next move is to find his birth in Ireland, to determine which Philip he is, which will be no easy task, with so little Irish documentation being available.
