As I recall, without seeing one as a clue, bit.ly addresses are one of several ways of shortening a web address (or URL). You just type them into your browser, like any other URL, or click on them.

URL shorteners are particularly useful in printed material where the real URL is rather long and also in mailing list postings where the URL can often be broken by a new line so a shorter URL is less at risk.

To create one you need to go to the facility's website, type or paste the original long URL in and you get back the short version that you can then use wherever you would have used the original.

Kay, just to explain, they appear at the end of some of the magazine articles with comments like 'Find out more at bit.ly/1zqXDuL' and Adrian's explanation is bob on!!
