New Jersey, USA BMDs

Postby Mervyn.Powell.25267 » Fri May 08, 2015 4:58 pm

Can anyone point me in the right direction for the BMDs for Newark, New Jersey for the 1910/20s.

My search is for a marriage between an Ethel BUNCE and an Edward LOWER (1920 US Census spelling).

Ethel (born 1898 in Derby), emigrated with her parents Joseph Oliver BUNCE and Eliza Ann (nee ELLIS) and her brother Joseph Oliver Jnr. They emigrated in 1910 and settled in Newark, New Jersey and were living there as a family in the 1920 US Census. By this time Ethel has married and she, and her husband, a chauffeur were living with them.

Joseph Snr and Eliza appear in both the 1930 and 1940 Censuses, in Newark in 1930 and in Dover, Ocean County, New Jersey in 1940. Living with them in 1940 is a Grandson, shown as R Edmund LAUER, aged 18, who is clearly the son of Ethel and Edward, who have disappeared after 1920.

I would like to find the marriage details for Ethel and Edward, the birth of their son, and any other children they may have had.

Also any info on the movements of Ethel and Edward after 1920.

Any help would be most appreciated in a query that has bugged me for several years.

Suggest you post on the New jersey Board on Rootschat. Members are usually very helpful.

It doesn't answer your question, but have you also looked at the New Jersey State Census for 1915 which is available on http://www.familysearch.org ?

Thanks to both of you.
I've never used Rootschat before but will give it a go.

Yes the family do appear on the 1915 Census for NJ but there is a strange way of recording the locations. I believe they translate in directories on Ancestry. It would help if there was a1925 NJ Census.

Has anyone ever ordered anything from a US Records Office and were there any problems ????

Mervyn, there is a repository for NJ birth, marriage and death records from 1878 to present:

NJ Dept. of Health and Senior Services
Vital Statistics Registration
PO Box 370
Trenton, NJ 08625-0370
(609) 292-4087
http://www.state.nj.us/ health/vital/vital.htm

The cost through mail is $25.00 for copy of record through search of one year.

Good luck!

Hi all,

Rootschat turned up a couple of entries which are promising although they don't match completely with my listed info.

They have given me an Edwin Raymond LAUER, born late 1921 which would match the 1940 census age of 18, but unfortunately no further info on Edward and Ethel, who are still missing.

If this Edwin is correct, he appears to have married twice and had a number of children first time around.

But now, if correct, I need to try and come down the lines for descendants.

I’ve tried all the US records I can think of, but can’t find Ethel and Edward, so this is a real long shot:
1930 Census, Trenton, Mercer, New Jersey
Edward Lauer, boarder, male, widowed, 33, kilnman in pottery, born New Jersey, father and mother born NJ

The surname has been transcribed as Laura but there’s a ‘hanging letter’ on the entry above, and if that’s disregarded, the name really looks like Lauer. Even if this isn’t your Edward, it may suggest an alternative search. Is it possible you can’t find them because Ethel died after her son’s birth and Edward moved on?

Hi sdup26,

I thought I was thorough but I hadn't found that one. It would certainly explain why Ethel was missing from the census.

The Grandson is not shown with the BUNCE's (Spelt BUNSE) in 1930, so I suppose he could have been with the LOWER's but I don't know the names for Edward's parents. For an age of 18 on the 1940 Census the child would have to be born between 1 April 1921 and 1 April 1922 otherwise should only show as 17 so the November DOB thrown up on Rootschat may well be right.

The small tree on Ancestry for this one does give parents names as Edward and Ethel, but without any sources.
