Could you give us a little more of the context by which you came by these photos. It might help us to help you. I'm not an expert on uniforms and the like but something about the middle photo suggests to me that this was not taken in the UK.

They were found in an old album of my grandads, a family which had been in Scotland for the last 250 years, however some have emigrated to Australia

These photographs could have been taken at a Remount Depot. It was here that the Army Service Corps trained horses and mules for service in the army. The photo appear to show stages in the training of a horse. First the breaking in where a "Rough Rider" would be used. These men often came from the colonies or the U.S. hence the informal clothing. Next came the schooling where a horse would be trained for regimental duties. Finally the finished object. This would be the photo taken when the leaves were on the trees. There were only four remount depots in the U.K so it should n't be difficult to establish where the pictures were taken. Jeff Ward.

WW1 Horses

Jeff's comments have reminded me that there was a programme possibly last autumn about the training of horses for war service during the 1WW. The programme showed the gathering of horses around the west country and bringing them over from the USA. I think one of the depots for this was near Bristol. Unfortunately, I cannot remember which channel the programme was shown on.
