Italy in 1920?

I have a few glass and film negatives in an old box that belonged to my grandfather - they are mostly boats and family groups. I was able to find a photo shop that could arrange to have them transferred to a CD - the most convenient medium for me, and not too expensive.
This photo may be connected to a holiday in the Italian or Swiss lakes that my grandfather took in approx 1920. Does anyone recognise the town? The photographer was evidently on a pier or harbour wall when the picture was taken - evidently a warm day, as suggested by the clothes!

The photo is shown back to front as one of the houses behind the rope to the bowsprit has a name "Hotel ????" visible but reversed.

The rope is in the way but if the photo were corrected, it might be possible to read the partial name.

Looking at the name of the hotel. I wonder if it says "Hotel Regina". A bit of idle googling brought up a hotel with that name in Torquay in Devon. I then looked at images, and came up with the following picture:

This has four windows across the front on the first three floors and six on the top floor, just like your old photo. If you look at other pictures you will see that the general backdrop is a good match. Best in mind that with your picture being in eyre verse, the actual hill should stretch up to the right.

Would Torquay be a possibility in terms of places that might fit?

Me again. If you look at a website called bathintime dot co dot uk, and search for "Torquay" you should get 14 old photos of Torquay in the 1930s. The seventh one in the list includes the Hotel Regina, and also sailing boats similar to the one in your photo.

Well, I am just astonished at how quickly and accurately you all sorted it out! I had not noticed the hotel sign.... Even so, I would not have found Torquay .... As you imagine, it's not too far from where I now live, so I may pop down to Torquay and compare the scene.
Many heartfelt thanks!!!!
