Photographs in South African Personal Collection

Postby GELGreenland » Sun Apr 12, 2015 12:07 pm

I am seeking help in identifying the decade when the attached pair of photographs might have been taken. My great-grandfather, Francis Henry James, born in Bromley in 1868, went to South Africa in about 1890 - he is not present in the England 1891 census and he was married in SA by 1894. He remained in SA and died there.

These photographs appear to have been cut to fit small frames for display. There is nothing on them to help identify them but I believe they were sent to SA or carried there by my great-grandfather. Could these have been his parents who were born in England around 1830?

Could these people possibly have been from Sweden or Finland as my grandfather married a Swedish/Finnish immigrant to South Africa. Her parents arrived in SA at the turn of the 20th Century and perhaps these are her parents back home in N. Europe?

Many thanks for any help given.
