I think the only way you'd confirm that story would be if it was reported in the papers - probably as a result of an inquest. Even if you found the elusive death certificate, I doubt it would refer to anything other than an infection.

If the coroner mentioned the horse as a source of infection, then surely it's an interesting enough story to appear in the local papers and indeed to get copied across the country - possibly even into mainland Britain. Irish newspapers can be obtained online from several sources and I found events from one county appear in a number of places.

Hi All,

I've been in contact with Hugh who so kindly took the grave picture etc for me and he is going to Samuel's grave to take a closer look at dates. He said he will confirm soon. Hugh also informs me the 8th Hussars were stationed in Co Longford, Ireland from 1872 to 1875.

Kind regards,

Peter.

Hugh has now confirmed Samuel Boon's death date and it was 1875.
Also, Hugh sent me the transcript of the burial page with Samuel senior and Samuel juniors burial entry and it reads 1875 (Samuel senior) and 1872 (Samuel junior). Hugh also informs me this book of burials for St Johns, Temple Michael, Co Longford, Ireland was compiled 29 yrs ago.

Thanks to everyone who has left me valuable messages. Not found Samuel seniors death certificate however, but people have filled in gaps for me in the process of searching for a death certificate for Samuel senior...thank you.

Kind regards,

Peter.

Samual Boon was a Seargeant Major Farrier. Right sleeve shows four chevrons, horse shoe and crown of SM.
He was also married to my 2x great aunt.

Samuel Boon must of known James Champion V.C. 1834-1904 who won the Victoria Cross in 1858 during the Indian Mutiny whilst with the 8th Hussars.
James is on my family tree.

Hi there,

The picture is of the 8th Hussars when based at Co Longford, Ireland.
Hugh Farrell, who lives in Co Longford sent me this picture. Hugh is also researching the 8th Hussars.
