60 Rifles

Postby deke » Sat Feb 21, 2015 9:21 am

My great grandfather is listed as being in the 60 Rifles in 1871 at Colchester. Does anyone know where they served before that?

Which battalion?

I think you'd be better off searching for his service record.

A census reference would have been welcome but as it happens I've had a rummage around and it looks like the 4th. This battalion is listed as being in England in 1871. Before that they were in Canada.

The best way to track a man's movements is through his service record or through the pay and muster lists.

You could also try the Pay lists/Muster Rolls (WO 12) at The National Archives, Kew. It is useful to search the Internet before you come to this board as it suggested by other questions on the regiment that they were in Ireland before Canada.
