Archangel?

Postby tiggerhill00 » Wed Feb 18, 2015 11:11 am

I have found my great uncle Alfred Henry William Wright war records. He enlisted in July 1916 to the as corps (remounts).
He appears to have moved around alot, 5 other corps.
What I really want to find out is about his service in Russia between 6.10.18 and 9.6.19 with the Durham Light Infantry.
His reason for discharge wad DAH but I think he suffered shell shock from what family have said. Its believed he received electric treatment for it? I would like to know more about this too.

I don't think they had ECT (if that's what you mean) at the time of WW1. It was invented in 1938 according to Wikipedia.

I would stick with the documentary evidence if I were you - he was discharged with a dodgy heart. There's a lot of stuff on DAH available on the internet which you may find worth reading.

Archives (see The National Archives catalogue) suggest that 'Electric Shock Therapy' was in use in the early 1920s. The likelihood is that the person was admitted as a voluntary patient or not to a 'Mental Hospital' and you would to have some idea of which area this was.

He went back to the Isle of Wight when he was discharged. He died in 1943 aged 44 from broncho pneumonia and myocardial degeneration but he was in the County Mental Hospital in Newport IoW when he died.

Try the Isle of Wight Record Office who seem to have the records in series HO 4 but they are likely to be closed so you may need a Freedom of Information request to get the information> The archivist in Newport will be able to advise and if the record has survived then it may have details of his medical history.

Recent WW1 documentary (Tony Robinson, I think) showed the "miracle cure" effected in the neurasthenia hospital (before and after b&w film). It was then shown to be faked. I thought the "cure" was electro-convulsive therapy.
