War Records

Postby Beth Hancock » Fri Feb 13, 2015 3:48 pm

My Father, Harold Wright Hockney was born December 1899 . He was in the Army and his certificate shows he served with the Sherwood Forresters from 1918- 1919. He does not appear in any war records. He did not serve overseas, he was a pharmacist , I understand that he was based at Canterbury, does anyone know anything about this?

Beth, if you post on the Long Long Trail forum for WW1 there will be a host of very experienced answers, probably the best answer will be from SteveB an absolute mine of information re the Sherwood Foresters He helped me fantastically!

It may be that he enlisted at the end of the war and did not serve abroad. Is it possible as he had volunteered he got a sponsored place to study pharmacy? Have you checked with the college where he studied, if they amalgamated with another institution there may still be records. Also have you checked with the pharmacists regulatory body (I'm not sure what they are called, but all pharmacists would be registered).

From your Ancestry tree it looks as though he was at the old Chelsea Polytechnic. Have you checked this out:

If you contact Kings College they may well be able to help.
Here is the link for The Royal Pharmaceutical Society, they will most likely have quite extensive records, and may have details of postal courses in the 1920's which is also a possibility:
