Since originally writing this post I've managed to find (with help from others on here, thank you) that my x4 great grandmother Ellen Keena or Kena married 3 times to Samuel Robinson in 1842, Michael Horking in 1846, and Samuel Wharton in 1851. On the 1851 census my x3 great grandfather James was living with Ellen and Sam Wharton but his surname as is his brothers is given as Robinson and then his sister is given as Rachel Wharton. In 1861 his surname is given as Horking, 1871 is Horking, 1881 is Horking, 1891 is Horking (they are sometimes spelt wrong on ancestry) and in 1901 the surname is given as Wharton, his death record is also given as Horking.

Since that I've found that his eldest daughter gave her surname as Wharton on one of her sons birth certificates in 1890 but in 1888 her surname on her marriage certificate is given as Horking. James' second eldest daughter signed her marriage certificate Harriet Whar. The Wharton name was half completed and crossed out and replaced with Horking. James' son my x2 great grandfather is on the 1881, and 1891 census as Horking and the 1901 and 1911 as Wharton.

Does anyone know what the reasons for this could be?
