World War 1 horses

Postby JulieH1969 » Wed Oct 22, 2014 1:07 pm

This is a massive long shot, but does anyone know if such a list exists of the horses used during World War 1, names and where they came from etc? Including what happened to them during the war? I recently found out one of my ancestors had one of his horses taken for use in the War and it was believed this commission led to his own demise. Would be interesting to find out.
Thanks
Julie

You could begin here: http://www.1914-1918.net/ASC_Remounts.html . For more information, the experts on The Great War Forum may give more detail.

Thank you for your response, I will have a good look at that website and also try the other board you mentioned.
Thanks

I do not know if you have already done this but I put '1WW Horses' into my search engine. There are some useful sites for background information on the use of horses in the war. Not sure if there is a register or anything like it as more than a million were used in various roles. I saw a programme fairly recently, on BBC 4, I think, about the horses and their involvement. Not sure if that is helpful but when in doubt, I explore any possible avenue.

Oh thank you for that, I think sometimes I put too much information into the search engine and hadn't put that in, I will give it a try. I will also check out the iplayer to see if that programme is still listed - thanks so much!!!
