Army service between WW1 and WW2

Postby Michele » Mon Oct 20, 2014 4:43 pm

Hello,

Can anyone help to answer this question please - was there compulsory national service in England at any time between 1921 and 1939?
I have an ancestor who was in the army service corps during the late 1920's and/or early 1930's and am just wondering if he was compelled to join the services, or if he was a career soldier.

Thanks in advance!

According to Wikipedia conscription in the UK finished in 1919 with the legislation lapsing in 1920. It didn't restart until 1939.

While the last conscripts would have taken a few years to get through their career, I'd GUESS that they'd be out by 1923????? If not sooner.
