Which war & Regiment?

Postby coopernicola » Thu Oct 02, 2014 3:42 pm

Can anyone help with this soldier. I'm unsure if this is a WWI photograph. I know the man pictured was born 1901 so I'm guessing WWI as he seems quite young. Also I'm unsure of the regiment but the cap badge appears to be Royal Field Artillery.

The uniform appears to be identical to that worn by my father in the Second World War. He served with the Royal Field Artillery. To me this man looks like he could easily be 39/40 but not young enough for the picture to be WW1.

Those caps are never found in WW1 pictures (what, never? Well I think I can say "never"....)

If he was born in 1901, then he appears older than 18 or 19 years which he would have been when the 1WW ended November 1918. This leads me to believe this is not a 1WW photo.

Thanks for the swift replies, I've got to the stage were I can no longer guess ages of people by their old photographs (especially men who did not lose their hair!) I'm glad the uniform provided the clues.

My grandfather served in World War 2 with the Royal Artillery and we have a picture very similar to that one.

The hat on your picture attached to the gentleman's left shoulder is known as a field service cap, and the cap badge is most definitely Artillery. Incidentally, his rank at the point that picture was taken would have been Lance Corporal ( more commonly known as Lance Bombardier) in the Artillery regiments. That would certainly indicate an element of 'time served' to gain that accreditation, at least 4 years in my estimate, which would put him mid 20's at the earliest, certainly no younger.
