Do look at the comprehensive history on the FibiWiki here http://wiki.fibis.org/index.php?title=76th_Regiment_of_Foot. I note it begins by saying that the Regiment was raised for service in India in 1787.

This is probably the history you want:
"HAYDEN Lieut Colonel F A
Historical Record of the 76th Hindoostan Regiment from its formation in 1787 to 20th June 1881. " Unfortunately I am unable to locate a digitised copy of this book.

Having followed my own advice and looked at Wikipedia (partly to see if it's the same as the FIBIS Wiki - it's different) I see that Wikipedia lists several places that were major sources of recruits for your version of the 76th. Beware though - recruits could come from anywhere.
