Harold Benjamin Mayfield was born in Lincoln in 1899, the son of Robert, b. abt 1871 at Newark, Notts and Sarah Elizabeth, b. Lincoln. In all, by 1911, Robert & Sarah Mayfield had 4 sons:
William, (14); Robert (13); Harold B (11) and Jack Leonard (1).

I have found Ivy Doris in the 1911 census in Lincoln. The family is mistranscribed as Nowal and Ivy is down as Ivy Douis not Ivy Doris. Parents are William Henry Norval an Insurance Agent and Helena and they claim to have married in 1899 but haven't located a marriage yet. There are a number of siblings, several of whom also married in 1920's/1930's in Lincoln.

From Family Search, which I know is not always reliable, there is a marriage for a William Henry WOOLLEY to Helena Richardson 23 July 1898 at St Martins Lincoln, bit of a stretch, but the christian names and date match.

This is a strange one. I think Sally has identified the correct marriage as both Ivy Doris ( born 1902) and her sister Elsie Dorothy ( born 1902) appear to have been registered with the surname Woolley while the other children who appear in the 1911 census - May (Helena May born 1899) ,Ethel 1903, Margaret 1905, William Henry 1906 and Sidney L 1910 are all registered Norval. In 1901 the family are in Lincoln (transcribed Nowall on Ancestry). Wm Hy is given as age 35 (same age is given for him in 1911!!) and he is described as a Blacksmith's striker born Sheffield ( in 1911 he says he was born in Lincoln). Helena is 26 and says she was born in Derby (in 1911 she is 35 and says she was born in Lincoln) and they have one child Helena M age 1 born Lincoln ( I assume this child is the May age 12 listed in 1911).
Helena appears to have died in 1935 in Lincoln age 59 and William Henry died in 1975 in Lincoln age 98. William Henry may have married again as there are a couple of later marriages in Lincoln, however these could equally refer to his son William Henry born in 1906.
There is also a puzzle re Ivy Doris and Elsie Dorothy who both seem to have been registered in 1902 but in different quarters (March and December) and who appear age 9 and 8 in the 1911 census. It is feasible that Ivy Doris was born late 1901/early 1902 and Elsie right at the end of 1902.

There is a report in the Lincolnshire Echo in February 1932 of a libel case between a Frederick Venables Norval JP and his brother William Henry Norval of 73 Mill Road Lincoln ( the same address that the Norval family including Ivy Doris were living in 1911). Tried to find a birth for Fred V and drew a blank with Norval but did find a Frederick Venables Woolley born in Lincoln in 1882. Fred V Woolley married France's Ellen Tarbuck in Newark in 1907 but by 1911 they had become Frederick Norval (transcribed as Nowal on Ancestry) age 28 born Lincoln and wife Helen age 25 born Newark and they were living in Newark on Trent. Frederick Norval died in 1953 in Christchurch Hampshire and left a will in which he is described as Frederick Venables Woolley or Norval or Woolley-Norval. He left his money etc to his wife Frances Ellen. Can't find Frederick in 1891 or 1901 and can't find William Henry in 1881 or 1891. All very curious.

Great Findings Isobel so Woolley and/or Norval. It never ceases to amaze me where some of these queries lead!

Ok - now got them in 1901 (Norvall) and 1911 (Woolley)
1901 75 Kingsley Street, Lincoln
Wm Hy Norvall 68 Messman in Foundry born Hampshire
Jane wife 47 born Chester
Fredk 18 Iron Moulder born Lincoln
Herbt 17 Engine Fitter born Lincoln
Joseph 16 Errand Boy born Lincoln
Thomas 13 born Lincoln
Mabel 11 born Lincoln
Ethel 9 born Lincoln - Ethel May Woolley 1892
Harold 6 born Lincoln - Harold Woolley born 1894

William Henry's age of 68 matches with the death of William Henry Woolley in 1901 so I am fairly sure that he died in late 1901. Jane is a widow in 1911 and the whole family is back to being Woolley.

I have been looking at the possibility of an earlier marriage between a Norval and a Woolley to possibly account for the switching of names but haven';t found anything.
