Gideon Cockaday b.circa 1754

Postby Joyce Holder » Sun Aug 17, 2014 3:28 pm

I have been searching for a record of the baptism of Gideon Cockaday (Cockadee/da or Coquide) circa 1754 ,probably in the Norwich area.
In October 1775 he married Mary Base @ St.James,Pockthorpe,Norwich and they had 8 children between August 1776 and February 1797--all baptised in Norwich. He was buried in 1820 @ St Augustine's Norwich. There is a baptism record for a John Cockaday 1752 @ St.Augustine's,son of John and Mary and also one for Christmas Cockada in June 1758 @ St James ,Pockthorpe also to John and Mary. Could these be siblings? John, Christmas ,Gideon and Abraham seem to be family names.
Many of the family were silk weavers and the name Cocquide is among the Walloons who settled in Norwich from about 1580
Until I have Gideon's parents names I am stumped and I would be over the moon if anyone can tell me the PARISH in which he was baptised or any other means of obtaining proof of his parents names.

I've not found Gideon b1754 either, but did find a "...Cockaday bpt. 1 Apr 1723 to Gideon & Mary Cockaday" at St Augustine, Norwich. This suggests the family may have been living in the parish for at least two generations. Having checked the Norfolk transcription project, St Augustine has not yet been fully transcribed and added to Ancestry. It may be a waiting game. If you are able to visit the archive at Norwich you may find the family using their records quite quickly.
I have a Norwich FHS subscription so will have a hunt for you later today.

Have you tried 'freereg' - the same group as 'freebmd? Almost all of Norfolk registers have been transcribed by volunteers. You may find something there by using different versions of his name. I did find some entries for him on familysearch.org but mostly for his offspring. Hope that helps a little.

My thanks to Coopernicola and Brunes 08 for your suggestions, which I will follow up.
I have tried some of the records in The Norfolk Record office but with limited time there, I have had no success. Some of the records around that time are virtually illegible so take forever to decipher. Coopernicola,it seems you may also be searching for the same person .If I find him, I will post it here.
My thanks again. Your input is appreciated.

Hello Joyce.
I'd be very interested in anything you have found out on the silk weavers, Cockadays. I believe that is my family also. I'm not sure of all the details myself and will have to ask other members of my family.

Hi
It seems John Cockaday left a Will when he died in 1795 .
It's available to order here
http://nrocat.norfolk.gov.uk/DServe/dse ... e%27%29%29

It costs about a fiver and may be well worth the investment

ps someone on Ancestry has a marriage for John and Mary Weston 21.5.1753 at Norwich
And his burial according to Familysearch is on the Genelogist 28.9.1795 Non conformist registers.

Hi all
My family were Cockaday's too, seemingly Weavers. Anybody found the line leading to the Amies family?
Mine are in that line as my Great Grandmother was an Amies from Norfolk. Thank you

No need to order the will. It's freely available on Family Search
