1/2 Siege Batteries, R.G.A.

Postby robneil » Fri Aug 08, 2014 10:15 am

Making some progress with the service of my great grandfather, 2246 Joseph Crawford R.G.A.

I know he joined up in 1899, served with 1 and 2 siege bty RGA, as BQMS and BSM respectively. Prior to that, he was a cpl at the Gt Yarmouth depot in 1911 and a gnr at Weymouth in 1901. He was married in Lydd, Kent in 1912 (when a Sgt) and retired in 1924 as a WO1 with LS&GC and MSM's.

Any hints as to where to go next - or if anyone has a mention of him in a war diary, etc, I'd be most grateful!

Thanks

Have you got his service record? As he served past 1920, the record should be with the MoD. See TNA Guide on http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/records/looking-for-person/britisharmysoldierafter1913.htm for how to get it.

There is a single line entry for him on FindMyPast in the "Royal Artillery Attestations 1883-1942", but it is only a summary. Note he's indexed under his later number of 1400340 and a former service number of 2216, which is incorrect - the downloaded image reads 2246. (Note downloaded images are bigger and clearer for this dataset than the initial image online).

For his WW1 service, see http://www.1914-1918.net/ for how to do that. I guess you need to trace the Battery in question (looks like No. 1 SB for the duration), but I'm not sure how to do that.

His Medal Index Card (which you may already have) shows he entered France 25 Sept 1914.

Thanks for the reply.

Yep, already got all of that info and I'm waiting to hear back from the MoD. Bearing in mind it took a year to get my grandfather's records back, I'm not holding my breath!
