Family Tree software & IHGS courses

Postby HilarySteve59 » Wed Jun 18, 2014 6:52 pm

Hi - I'm new to the forum & shortly retiring to take up genealogy more seriously following 10 years plus part time research of my own family tree. I would be very interested in any views on the best software for creating family trees as far as best presentation/format and also if anyone is undertaking courses with the IHGS in Canterbury compared to undergoing independent study through reading & say courses at Society of Genealogists in London. Any help much appreciated. Steve

Steve - the question about "which is the best software" has arisen before several times. Naturally anyone who is happy with whatever they use is going to recommend it as best. (I am a Legacy user, like it for many reasons and have no intention of changing). However, if you want an unbiased opinion, you can also consult some of the comparisons, such as this one: http://genealogy-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ or even one on Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_genealogy_software. To find these, all you need to do is put "comparison of genealogy software" into your search engine.

Don't know about IHGS.

Would certainly recommend joining a society and attending their library where you can meet and share notes with, and get advice from other researchers.
Good hunting! Sylvia

There is also Pharos Tutors who offer numerous courses including one on becoming a professional genealogist. http://www.pharostutors.com

Many thanks Sylvia & Martin for your responses. Agree the Legacy Family Tree looks good, certainly has good reviews. Will take a look at the comparison sites you suggest. Have not come across the "pharostutors" courses as yet so will explore. Guidance is much appreciated. Steve
