The record states that he was sentenced for desertion and also for absconding whilst in custody. Reading through the file he appealed to be released after serving 2 months , promising that if he were sent back to the front he would endeavour to make up for what he had done. There is a note from the Brigade Major expressing his opinion that if released he was likely to desert again.
The maximum penalty for desertion was death so it could have been much worse for him!

He returned to duty 8 Jun 16 , went before a medical board 18 Jul 1916 and as a result was discharged 1 Aug 1916 , para 392 xvi - no longer physically fit for service.

I'm fairly certain that "not ... fit" is as detailed an explanation as you're going to get. I think that detailed medical and court-type records were destroyed in the infamous Arnside St. warehouse fire in WW2.

As a general rule the surviving soldiers' papers represent the maximum detail you'll get.

I also have to say that the conclusion of the medical people here sounds just a bit too convenient. I would SPECULATE that someone may have suggested to the medics "Get rid of him if you can! " In other words, any paperwork might not give the full truth anyway.

As I said in my last message he was discharged as no longer physically fit. It's not possible to find out any more but you could speculate that a year's hard labour might have had a bad impact on his health. Sorry - Adrian just beat me to it.

I have come across several 'not fit' for further service ins several of my ancestor's records. It was clear though that this was because of injury or genuine illness. So your ancestor may have been genuinely ill or just unfit and didn't pass the required standard any more.
