John Martin

Postby Panda53 » Fri Apr 25, 2014 1:57 am

My Great Great Great Grandfather was John Martin born 29 August 1818 I have been trying to find out where he was born. He emigrated to Australia and appears to have been estranged from his UK family.
He married and died in South Australia. The marriage and death certificates for the mid 1800s in South Australia are quite scant of information.
However I have ascertained archived details for his attendance at the Calendonian Asylum in London and have a copy of his application (and later his brother's) to attend. There were accepted and these documents revealed the James Martin was the father born about 1787 in County Galloway and the mother Elizabeth was born about 1788 in County Lanarkshire.
James was invalided from the foot regiment after injury in Corfu. I have gathered these details from the archives.
I tried searching for his brother's information and located him as Norval Douglas Martin born 24 February 1824 Hackney and then a sister Ann born 12 September 1826 also in London.
There should be more at least four more children that were all alive in 1827
Have found marriages for both Norval and Ann but no deaths that I am confident belong.
I did order Norval Martin's death from 1855 however this is not my Norval nor a child of his.
I have located Census records which I am reasonably confident are James, (he was a painter by trade) Elizabeth and then Ann.
I could order James' death certificate but not sure that would be of help.
What I would really like to find is where John was born
Would be also great if could find the Uncle's and Aunts
Would really appreciate some suggestions
Thanks

AJ

Galloway is an area of South West Scotland, rather than an actual county, comprising Wigtownshire and Kircudbrightshire. So with this understanding, there is this entry in Familysearch which may refer to your James Martin:
Name: James Martin
Gender: Male
Christening Date:
Christening Place: , KIRKBEAN, KIRKCUDBRIGHT, SCOTLAND
Birth Date: 24 Oct 1789
Birthplace: , Kirkbean, Kirkcudbright, Scotland
Father's Name: William Martin
Mother's Name: Mary Smith
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: C11870-2
System Origin: Scotland-VR
GS Film number: 1068032
Reference ID: 2:165D1D8

This couple appear to have had 7 children between 1785-1798.

Mary Elizabeth born 27 Jul 1819 baptised 6 Jun 1824
John born 1 Jan 1821 baptised 6 Jun 1824
George born 24 Jun 1823 baptised 6 Jun 1824
Norval Douglas born 24 Feb 1824 baptised 28 Mar 1824

James Martin (55), painter, is on the 1841 census with his wife Elizabeth (54) and daughter Ann (14) at 6 Castle Court, St Giles, Cripplegate. HO107/727/5 fol.23

The baptisms that Peter found are in Ancestry's set of London Parish Registers.

And in 1851 I think that this is the same James and Elizabeth:

Registration district: East London
Sub-registration district: Cripplegate
ED, institution, or vessel: 1f
Street: 14 ? Whiterwas Street ?
Household schedule number: 119
Piece: HO 107/1525
Folio: 224
Page Number: 20
James Martin 69, pensioner, late 75th foot, b. Ayrshire, Scotland
Elizabeth Martin 57, b. Renfrewshire, Scotland
(I think her age is supposed to be 67, but certainly looks more like a 57)

Now to find the children!

Have been looking at other marriages in the London PR's. This may be one:
8 Aug 1852 at St Peter's, Bethnal Green,
George Martin, age 30, bach, Piano Maker, 16 White St., s/- James Martin, Carpenter
Emma Cooke, age 24, spin, 16 White St., d/o James Cooke, grocer
witnesses Felix & Elizabeth Cooke.

I see that you have a tree up on Ancestry in which you have at least one of Norval's children back in Scotland.

To those that have replied Thank you
However the only information that I with sufficient confidence to James and Elizabeth are the children Norval Douglas and Ann.

The Baptism for James does seem plausible but may be a little early. Information I have suguests he was born around 1785 in Wigtown (He was in His Majesty's 25th Regiment of the foot and was invalided on Corfu around 1815)
I have James' Military Information from Find My Past

Elizabeth was born in Glasgow around 1788

I have applications to the Calendonian Asylum for John and Norval (have been to London Metropolitan Archives and have taken pictures of the applications and discharges from the school).

I am still looking for John's elusive birth birth
