Finnish relative died at sea

Postby Lexx-xx » Mon Apr 21, 2014 10:18 am

My great great grandmother married a Finnish sailor in 1916 called Julius Ponni. He died a year later at sea. He was born in 1889 and his father's name was Hermann Ponni. Does anyone have any idea how to trace him back to Finland or find anything about him? I'm curious to see if any of his family (descendants) are alive.

You may already have his memorial (http://www.londonremembers.com/memorial ... tions/8868) but as he was in the Mercantile Marine service his marine record should be at either The National Archives in Kew or the National Maritime Museum. Have you tried contacting the archives in Finland, I am not sure how much they (Finland) have as they were under Russian control at various points in history.

Good Morning
Let's start with his medal record at the National Archives.
That gives his date of birth as 1888 and place as Wyborg which at the time was in Finland.
Wyborg was taken by the Russians in 1944 and now in the province of Leningrad. It is a medieval town on the coast between St Petersburg and Helsinki. In Finnish it is Viipur and Russian Viborg .

The place to go after that is Familysearch. That has an index of Finnish records and articles on what is available for Finland. There are websites Finland Genealogy and Finland genealogy links availible form there. The Finland Family history society has a project called HiKi which is a database of parish records etc like Familysearch and Free reg which may be useful.

Familysearch has a family tree for him.
Julius born 1.2.1888 Koivisto, Vpr, s of Hermann and Agneta Karvanen.
Parents Herman born and died at same place 9.7.1855- 4.1.1920 and Agneta 10.1.1858-1.10.1912.
siblings Ventla sister 5 October 1885-19.1.1966
Reinhold brother 17 September 1889-23.3.1960
Impi Maria 17 September 1891-24..9.1895
Hjalmar brother 4 September 1894-3.8.1951
Mikkel brother 25.9.1897-8.6.1914
Arvo brother 19 September 1900-7.1.1974
As you can see his brothers and sisters are dead but there may be nephews and nieces.after all someone posted the family tree.
Hope that gives you a few leads

I know you posted this a long time ago but I have just seen it and hoping you might still pick up messages. You said that your g.g.grandmother married Julius, she was my great grandmother, so somewhere along the line we are related. I have always wondered about Julius and delighted to find these details.
