Royal Engineers - 1st Reserve Battalion - WW1

Postby greenman126 » Mon Mar 31, 2014 12:35 pm

Please help - whilst carrying out research into family service in WW1 I came across reference to a relative whose MIC refers to '1st Reserve Battalion Royal Engineers'. I've carried out some internet research so far, but apart from a few references on other MICs I can find little/no information.

Can anyone help with information about the ''1st Reserve Battalion Royal Engineers'?

Other information I have was he lived in Marshfield, Gloucestershire and his Silver War Badge entry shows he didn't serve overseas (which most probably explains why he was able to be married in 1916).

Happy to provide any other info I can if I have it.

Many thanks in advance

The Long, Long Trail's article on the Field Companies of the Royal Engineers (RE) refers to the mobilisation of the RE in 1914 and says: "Men required to bring these Companies up to war establishment units came from the RE Training Depot at Aldershot (mounted men) and the RE Reserve Battalion and Depot Companies at Chatham (dismounted men)" (See URL http://www.1914-1918.net/re.htm )

Information on the Royal Engineers Museum Library & Archive includes a list of the RE's War Diaries - p.36 of this shows that 1st Reserve Battalion Royal Engineers had Companies A thru F, while there was also a 2nd Reserve Battalion Royal Engineers. At least....

URL https://wolverhamptonswar.wordpress.com/tag/royal-engineers/ refers to a chap who spent some months in the "Royal Engineers 1st Reserve Battalion, based at Chatham Kent."

Perhaps most useful is URL http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=135403 where someone wanting to know what "1st R.B.R.E, Brompton Barracks" meant, got a response "1st Reserve Battalion Royal Engineers", followed up by another posting agreeing and adding "These battalions passed recruits through in batches for training."

I'd never seen "Battalion" used in an RE context before, though the list of War Diaries makes it clear it was used several times.

Many thanks for the information - phone call to the Royal Engineers Museum seems logical. Much appreciated.
