WW1 signing up!

Postby siegfried » Wed Mar 26, 2014 3:48 pm

hi folks.
wondering if anyone can help me?

have researched 2 members of my family that lost their lives in WW1,
Charles Merrydew
Harry Merrydew, brothers from Arundel West Sussex.

the only problem i am having in regards to researching them is where they signed up.
Is there anyway of finding this infomation?

Many thanks in advance x

If you are lucky enough to find their attestation papers it will be stated. However not all the records survive. There may be some information on the Forces War Record site

If their records survive, have a look on I have found all my family's 1WW service records there. If you do not have a subscription to Ancestry, you may be able to have free access to the site at your local library. If you are not a member of your local library, you would have to join. However, that should be free, too. Hope you have some luck.

The list of those who died (on the ancestry website) says that Charles enlisted at Newhaven and Harry at Arundel. As they died there would be no pension files on them, although there are medal cards.
