My ancestor Robert Woodhouse born abt 1780 possibly Yorkshir

Postby fuzzyfoz » Mon Mar 24, 2014 2:26 am

Robert born abt 1823 Glasgow Scotland, Richard 1825 Warwickshire, Jane 1827 Cork Ireland.
This leads me to speculate that he was possibly travelling with a military unit.
Robert senior I discovered in Exeter Devon 1851gunmaker.
Any ideas how I might find his regiment?
I have not discovered any birth records for any of these Woodhouse ancestors, my places of birth for them were gleaned from England's census.
Thanks for any help/suggestions.

There are a couple of family trees on Ancestry - is one of them yours? They both have place of origin as Brigham, Yorkshire. One tree has Robert sr's wife is apparently named Eleanor and they married about 1820. The other doesn't name a wife. Both have first child - John, b.abt 1815 in Exeter.
Familysearch has 2 possible births (there may be others not included ) in Yorkshire.
Name: Robert Woodhouse
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 18 Mar 1781
Christening Place: ROTHERHAM,YORK,ENGLAND
Birth Date: 17 Feb 1781
Father's Name: John Woodhouse
Mother's Name: Elizabeth

or
Name: Robert Woodhouse
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 15 Oct 1782
Christening Place: GLAISDALE,YORK,ENGLAND
Father's Name: Matt. Woodhouse
There's an entry for Robert Woodhouse on the Peninsula Medal Roll from 1814 - he was an Ensign in the 38th foot Regt - but am sceptical about the relevance of this.
Note that the 1851 census includes his daughter, Mary, age 31 born in Brigham.

Thank you for your input.

My tree on Ancestry is the ROBERT WOODHOUSE born Brigham Yorkshire, not Glaisdale.
His marriage 1820 also Brigham.
Daughter Mary Ann's birth 1820 Brigham.

The birth, marriage and Mary Ann's birth was collected from the IGI (family search) a few years ago.
This data was submitted and as we know that is not always reliable.
I have the Peninsula Medal Roll record but there is no way of knowing if this is my "brick walk Robert".

Roberts wife's name ELEANOR was gathered from the 1841 census Exeter Devon.

To date I have no concrete evidence that Robert was in the military or even a traveller?
Quite a way around the globe to take the family if attached to a military unit? Ireland, Scotland and England?

Marriage certificates of his children are constant with him being a gun maker.

Also Robson's directory 1839
West st. Exeter
Robert Woodhouse Gunmaker

Pigots directory 1844
Guinea St
Exeter
Gunmaker

Whites Devonshire directory 1850
Gun and Pistol Makers
Robert Woodhouse
Market St Exeter

His death certificate 1867
Exeter workhouse
Robert Woodhouse age 86 years
Gun maker journeyman.

So the gunmaker occupation is the only record consistent.

I sincerely thank you for your reply and interest.
I'll continue to search for my 3x grandfather and hope soon I'll be able to dislodge a brick or two?

Sylvia
