Thank you to all those who replied both on the forum and direct to my email.

One of the reasons I asked the question was because some offices seem to have forgotten the reason why they were set up in 1836.

The main reason being -
It was hoped that improved registration of vital events would protect property rights through the more accurate recording of lines of descent.

It was not until later that the GRO formed a Statistical Department to compile medical, public health, and actuarial statistics and the registrars looked on that as one of their main tasks.

However the basic task is still the same as it was in 1836 to protect property rights through the more accurate recording of lines of descent.

In other words Family History
