George Bridgewater 1749 - 1828

Postby JasonB » Mon Mar 03, 2014 9:09 pm

I am trying to trace his parents but am having no luck on Ancestry. He was born in Evenlode, Gloucestershire or Worcestershire, England in 1749 and died on 26 Feb 1828 in North Littleton, Worcestershire, England. He married Sarah Durrin on 24 May 1778 in Evenlode.

I have had some Ancestry hints giving his fathers' name as George and his mothers' name as Ayliffe or Aliffe but no dates were listed for either of them. I have tried tracing these parents on Ancestry to verify but have had no luck locating them. Any help would be appreciated.

There's a christening on for George Bridgewater 24/1/1741, Sapperton, Glocs, father George, mother nee Aliffe. This George jnr died in 1745. In 1746, another George Bridgewater was christened 25/11/1746 in Duntisbourne Rouse (about 4 miles from Sapperton) with the same parents (but with mother's name spelled Ayliffe), suggesting that having lost a son called George, they gave the name to their next son. This is probably where the ancestry tree holders have got their information. You give your George's birth year as 1749, which presumably is based on his age at death if you don't know for sure when he was born, but the death informant may not have been sure of his age either, so 1746 isn't far out. That's if it is, indeed, your George!

Hi, I don't know if you're still looking, but George Bridgewater is one of my ancestors and I've found a baptism in Westcote, which is near to Evenlode, on 4th April 1756, parents John and Jane. It seems to be more likely than the Sapperton baptism.
