I would be very grateful for help identifying the details of this photograph that was passed down to me by my Grandad.
I.e. Where is this taken/what is the big gate/who is in the photo/when was it taken?
Many thanks in advance =]

WW1 surely, with those caps?
And the guy seated at the left looks interesting - different uniform - local liaison? interpreter?

Is the gates of a Town or City Hall that was liberated during the war? Looks like it's European.

Pretty sure those are WW1 uniforms and webbing. Putties had gone out of fashion by 1939. The liaison officer looks French. Is it possible to zoom in on the notice board by the gate?

Further to my post of yesterday, can you provide your grandfathers name .It may then be possible to trace the regiment and then establish where they were at say the end of WW1.

It does look like France, and a city gate rather than that of a chateau - judging by the bit of a statue visible on the right. As Jeff asks, is there anything readable on the plaque to the left of the iron gate?
I looked at Lille, which still has a Porte de Paris, but it's not quite right for this pic.

Have you tried putting the photo on the 1WW forum on The Long Long Trail. This is a site dedicated to the war - you might find some help there. Just put the Long Long Trail into your search engine and click on the site when it comes up. Down on the right hand site is a link to the Forum. If you obtain an appropriate response, do come back and tell us where the photo was taken.
