WW1 1916

Postby claudtowers » Fri Jan 24, 2014 11:34 pm

My grandfather Athole Montague Murray was captured by the Germans at the Battle of Ancres on 13/11/1916. Does anyone know where he may have been held. Are there any websites where I might find information about prisoners of war.

I'd try The Long, Long Trail website. It has a forum (half way down on the right hand side) if you need to ask for help.

Amazing site. I can't recommend it enough. All the people on the forum as so knowledegable about WW1 and specific events/regiments/battles etc I'm sure they'll be able to help you.

Have you looked at his service file at The National Archives (WO 339/5466) as the information should be in the file.

This man even has an interesting Medal Index Card, with info on both sides of the card. Seems he was a 2nd Lieut in the 17th Middx Regt and later a Lieut in the 5th Middx Regt. Went to France 29 May 1916. Back of the MIC says he made application for medals as was sailing for South Africa, dated 6 Sep 1919. Contact address was car of Capt. J Cotton of 116 Grosvenor Road, SW 1 and later of 7 Baker Street, W.1.

Ancestry also includes him - A M Murray - in a list of UK Officers Prisoners of War 1914-1918, unfortunately my subscription doesn't allow access to this record.
Good hunting! Sylvia

The UK Prisoner of War Record is not that illuminating, just states the following:
A M Murray, 2/Lt 17th Battalion Middlesex Regiment.
Date Missing: Nov 1916
Record Number: 3502
Section: Western Theatre of Operations
