in 1861-1871 my gggrandfather Joseph heathcote was a silk weaver in Macclesfield Cheshire then in 1881 he was a publican at the Duke of Bridgewater Arms in Wellington place, Manchester I couldn't work out why he had changed his occupation until I saw the program about the silk weavers all being out of work and having no money, he became a porter and ale brewer, then a publican. In 1851 all the family were involved in the silk industry dying, weaving and silk winding must have been quite an industry.
