The queens regiment 2nd may 1915, where were they?

Postby praggers40 » Sat Jan 11, 2014 11:59 pm

My great uncle Thomas John Eldridge was killed 16/5/15 he was a serjent in The Queens (royal west surrey regiment) 2nd battalion? Although he was from kent. He was a professional soldier having previously served in Gibraltar during 1911 census. His memorial is le Touret. I intend to visit this year so wonder where the battle was as I can find Le Touret.

Suggest you consult "The Long Long Trail" - this is their page of the West Surreys http://www.1914-1918.net/queens.htm.

See if you can find the war diaries for the Regiment. This could give you a lot of information about the Battalion. I was able to find a copy written by the Lt Col of my Grandfather's Regiment and from this followed his Battalion through all their time in the trenches. Look on Google or ask at your local library. Also the National Archives may have a copy.

The War Diary is available at The National Archives (TNA) as WO 95/1664 and is also available online from TNA at a small cost which will tell you where he and the unit was at the time he died.

Go to the Queen's Royal Surrey Regiment site and specifically the War Diaries for information on specific Battalions. Www.queensroyalsurreys.org.UK/war_diari ... _new.shtml
