John James Davies

Postby spothe » Thu Dec 26, 2013 4:12 pm

Can anyone she'd any more light on my great grandfather John James Davies. He was born in Aldershot in 1878 and died in 1935 in Manchester. The attached photo is the only one I have. Does anyone know what regiment he would have served in or can anyone she'd any more light on him? Kind regards

The regiment is either Royal Field Artillery or Royal Horse Artillery. RFA is bigger, so more likely.

(Cap badge is artillery and he wears spurs so not Royal Garrison Artillery, who were not mounted)

Thanks very much for this. Do you know who I would need to contact to go any further?

It's hard to shed light without a few more clues. Do you have any idea of how long he was in the army?

I have found what I think is your tree on Ancestry and note that he was still in civilian occupation at the time of the 1911 census. I have done a search of the medal index cards on ancestry and although there are a few John James Davies, the only one in the R.A. was KIA in 1918.

Suggest that if you don't already have them that you obtain birth certificates for any of his children born during or shortly after the end of WWI - they may well show his rank and regiment under occupation.

Once again, thank you very much for this. It is my family tree on Ancestry but my subscription has unfortunately had to be put on the back burner. I will check what I have and see if that sheds any further light although I'm not sure I have any birth certificates yet.

Many thanks again,
Paul
