Frederick Lisbert JEWELL

Postby SDV » Thu Jun 18, 2015 4:04 pm

I am interested in Emily Sarah Jewell, who was born in 1834 to John Jewell and Caroline Allen in Siddington, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. In June 1854, she married Joseph Bellenger, with whom she had several children.

I have, however, recently had my attention drawn to a baptism record for one Frederick Lisbert or Frederick Lisbut JEWELL, who was born in c1852. He was baptised in Siddington on 9 May 1852. There is no father given. His mother is given as Emily Sarah Jewell, who is described as a single woman.

I have not been able to find a birth certificate or any record of him after 1861. In 1861 he seems to be living with his Grand-parents, John and Caroline Jewell at Cricklade Road, Cirencester, Gloucestershire. At least there is an entry for him as Frederick Jewell aged 10, which is approximately correct. He is described in this entry as a "nephew".

Any help in tracking him down would be gratefully received.

Haven't checked after 1861 yet, but there's a birth entry for a 'Male' Jewell, MarQ 1852, Cirencester 6a 319, which could be Frederick, as Cirencester covers Siddington. 'Male' or 'Female' birth entries are usually when parents haven't decided on a name.

There's a marriage for a Frederick Jewell to Louisa Kent DecQ 1877, Cirencester 6a 758, but I'm having trouble finding them in 1881.

I think this is the Frederick you are looking for in 1871. The enumerator has written the surname as 'JOEL' and age is given as 13 born 1858 but these mistakes are common. He is living with Grandparents Caroline and John.

Relation:Grandson

Gender:Male

Where born: Siddington, Gloucestershire, England

Civil Parish: Siddington

This is likely to be him in 1891:-

I think that this is the Frederick Allen JEWELL, who was born in 1857 to Emily Sarah's brother William Allen and his wife, Elizabeth.

The Frederick JEWELL/JOEL that I am interested in was born in 1852.

I am fairly sure that there is more than one Frederick JEWELL/JOEL.

I still think the 'Male' Jewell 1852 birth certificate I referred to in an earlier post, is worth sending for.

I am still trying to discover what happened to Frederick Lisbert JEWELL/JOEL. All I know for sure is that he was born 04 Mar 1852, the son of unmarried Emily Sarah JEWELL in Siddington, Gloucestershire, and that he was baptised shortly after on 09 May 1852 at St Peter's in Siddington. In 1861, he was living aged 10 with his grandparents John and Caroline Jewell/Joel at Cricklade Road, Cirencester, recorded as their nephew.

The 1871 census appears to have him at Aldershot Depot serving in the King's Own Regiment of Foot, though it is only his birthplace that identifies him as my relative.

After that he seems to disappear. I would really like to know what becomes of him.

If Frederick remained with the King's Own Royal Regiment during the 1870s and early 1880s he may have served in the locations below:

March 1870 Aldershot
September 1871 Portsdown Hill and Marchwood
August 1872 Portsmouth and Tipnor
March 1874 Gosport
September 1874 Gibraltar
April 1878 Portsmouth
January 1879 Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad
February 1880 Depot Fleetwood
June 1880 Depot Lancaster
October 1881 Devonport, Jamaica and Trinidad
May 1882 Devonport
July 1882 Fleetwood, Preston, Isle of Man, Weedon and Tynemouth
September 1884 Aldershot

Also, there are several Islington workhouse records for a Frederick Jewell (printer) circa 1881, but probably isn't your man.

Thanks for the detailed list.

I have seen the Islington entries and I don't think he is my man. The previous census suggests a different origin other than Gloucestershire.
