GRO index

Postby SDV » Sun Oct 27, 2019 11:11 am

I am getting very tired of the GRO index. Once again trying to order a PDF for a David ORCHARD or David ARCHER. Free BMD shows very clearly David ORCHARD as d Q4 1852 Winchester 2c 47. But the GRO reveals nothing for either David ORCHARD or the alternative spelling of David ARCHER, despite turning on the various phonetic and similar settings.

I know I can go ahead and order the PDF using the Free BMD reference, but also know from experience that if the GRO believe the spelling to be wrong they will not issue a PDF and will simply give a refund. Very frustrating.

David ORCHARD...Winchester Q1 1853 vol 2c p75...mmn NAM. Listed on FreeBMD and GRO.

Cant see any entry in Q4 1852 under that name on either.

According to FamilySearch David Orchard was buried at Micheldever, 1 Dec 1852
Age 59
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:QP2W-FJ2P

Also burials there of Ann Gover and the Tibbles, Charles and Joseph, who have the same page ref, 2c 47, according to FreeBMD. I can find the Tibbles on the new GRO index, but not David or Ann!

Using "..." (thanks to Ian Bee) as the Surname doesn't give any useful answer.

I have also discovered that "-" appears to be used as an equivalent to unknown. For instance
Name: Age at Death (in years):
-, DAVID 0
GRO Reference: 1854 J Quarter in LEEK Volume 06B Page 142

No help there, I might add.

Looks good Ian. I tried all the vowels but didn’t think to add an extra letter!
Flagged this up to GRO so hopefully they will look and correct.

Many thanks for this. Like others I tried all the obvious formations, but would never have dreamt of the answer being RICHARD.

I find the inflexible mechanics of the GRO index very frustrating. Not for the first time, I have had to resort to using the skills of people on this site.

The really frustrating thing is that the real family name is ARCHER or at least that is the one use by some of that generation and subsequent generations. ARCHER seems to be a "corruption" of ORCHARD, with both being used simultaneously. So when going this far back I often have to search using both Archer and Orchard, and now apparently RICHARD or any other unlikely combination of letters!

Once again many thanks.
