Marriage certificate query

Postby Will Mundy » Thu Sep 26, 2019 11:34 am

I noticed on a marriage certificate of my x3 great grandmother Ellen Messinger in 1860 in Wheatley, Oxfordshire. Where it says father she lists her mother and maiden name of Gardiner, then underneath she lists her father William Messinger. Does this mean there was some doubt as to her father? On Ellen or Helen as she was actually baptised in Iffley 1841, she is listed as Helen Gardiner illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth Gardiner and William Messinger. William and Elizabeth eventually tied the knot in 1849 but strangely there is also record for their marriage in 1839. Any ideas would be appreciated

She's marrying as Ellen Gardner, not Messinger, but is acknowledging William as her father. I've got 3 illegitimate ancestors and none put a fathers name, so you're probably lucky, a known line to go down.

Perhaps he wasn't 'free' to marry in 1839 - a wife somewhere (?) who then died and they had a 'legal' marriage in 1849....?????
