Thanks for the reply and information
I guess I will NOT be able to find the marriage record of Edward Munt to Ellen

Would it be worth going to the local Register Offices in the district they got married ...?

Thank you

Sorry, I don't understand the question. If they didn't get married then what do you hope to find at the Register Office?

Maybe their marriage was not recorded or sent to the register office ...?

In the early 1930's Ellen can be found as Ellen Carlin on various Electoral Registers in and around London with James CARLIN. I can only see one boy b 1932 of this marriage

In 1939 James Frederick Tebbs Carlin is with 'wife' Lilian and two children.
This Lilian was Lilian Rose, b Feb 1905, maiden name was Hudson, she married 1923 Charles Orchard.
In 1935 she was on the Electoral Register with Charles, there appear to be 3 boys born of the marriage 1923 -1930

All the births are registered in the Lambeth area, looking at the Electoral roll and cross checking them may lead you to some answers

Hi
Thank you for the information and details

I’ll try and work out where their children fit in

It seems a very confusing family

That seems unlikely unlikely, especially as there is also no marriage for Ellen's husband, James Frederick Tebbs Carlin to his new 'wife' Lilian Rose Hudson/Orchard.

Even as 'recently' as the 1930's divorce wasn't easily accessible, so it wasn't particularly unusual for couples to claim to be married to each other when they weren't. My Great Grandparents split up in the late 1920's and my Great Grandfather went through a bigamous second marriage but my Great Grandmother just lived with someone and pretended to be married to him.

This reminds me of why my my grandfather and grandmother did not marry until the youngest of their 4 children was almost 12 years old (about 4 weeks short).
My grandfather had married his first wife in 1896 but they separated in 1899. He and my grandmother had 4 children between 1912 & 1922 but they did not marry until 1934 about 6 months after his first wife’s death. They were not able to divorce due to the divorce laws of the time, and they remained married (but separated) until her death.
It is possible they married after James Frederick Tebbs Carlin died in 1974 or they may not have bother after all that time.

Cheers
Guy

Kind regards

Hi Guy
Yes it’s very interesting to get the birth certificates from unmarried mothers to see which surname they use ......

Thanks for the reply and information

Kind regards
Simon :)
