OK - where are they?

Postby SDV » Wed Jul 17, 2019 12:37 pm

I know that George COWDRY and Martha GOLDING married on 10 Jan 1820 in Whitchurch, Hampshire. I also know that George died in 1867 (aged 77) and Martha in 1869 (aged 76), both in Whitchurch, Hampshire.

You would think that it was straight-forward finding them in the 1841, 1851 and 1861 censuses for Whitchurch. Well it isn't, despite trying several variations of surnames.

Any ideas?

Not sure if this is your couple, but in the 1861 census, there is a George & Martha Cowdery residing in Overton (Whitchurch).

Well done - that's them.

Still can't find them in 1841 or 1851! There is a George COWDERY in Overton in 1851, but he is a widower and as you have just proved Martha is still alive in 1861.

It appears the 1851 Cowdery family can be found residing at Chalk Dell, Overton, Whitchurch & Overton in the 1841 census. Wife's name: Hannah. I think the 1841-1851 family is a different one to yours. Have you had any luck with the Cowdry children? William, Mary Ann, Louisa, and Eliza Jane?

George Cowdry married Martha Butcher, March qtr 1852, Whitchurch RD

In 1851 she may be the widowed Martha Butcher in Southington, Overton, age 57, Washerwoman, born Whitchurch. Very similar details to Martha Cowdery in 1861!
And the widowed George in Overton in 1851 was a thatcher, just as George married to Martha in 1861 was.

A baptism at Overton, 20 July 1820, of William, parents William + Martha Cowdrey.
Was William buried there soon after, 26 Sep 1820?

Then, to confuse things, there seems to be a marriage at Andover, 22 June 1825, George Cowdery + Martha Bulpitt.
Folowed by baptisms at Andover of Mary Ann, 13 Oct 1825, died same year?, a second Mary Ann, 25 Dec 1826, Louisa, 4 January 1829, then Eliza Jane, 17 July 1831 (buried 1833?)
Birth dates given.

Burials at Andover of a Martha Cowdrey, 19 Feb 1833, age 25
and a George Cowdrey, 8 July 1838, age 31.
Perhaps they are the parents of those Andover children, and married young?

It's possible that, after the death of his wife Martha, the George in Andover married again.
To Sarah Newman, 25 January 1834, Andover
A baptism there, 4 March 1838, of a son Harry.

And in 1841, with George having died, in Andover are
Sarah Cowdry 30
Louisa Cowdry 12
Harry Cowdry 3
Fanny Cook 14
(piece 411 book 4 folio 5 page 4)

The question is, which George are you looking for?

Re Hannah, wife of George in Overton
Possible death from new GRO index
Sep 1843 Whitchurch and Overton vol 7 page 152
Cowdry, Hannah Maria
age 52

The marriage may have taken place in London
22 Nov 1825, St Pancras
George Cowdery, Widower
+
Hannah Maria Willshire, Spinster (or poss Wiltshire from sig?)
Says both of the parish of course.

A baptism at Overton, 26 Dec 1789, of an Anna Maria Wiltshire. Parents Robert + Sarah.
(I can see the Hampshire index on findmypast says 1790)

The primary person of interest is Martha GOLDING, my 4xGGM, who was born in Whitchurch on 28 Mar 1798, the daughter of George and Elizabeth GOLDING/GOLDEN.

There was a marriage in Whitchurch on 10 Jan 1820 between George COWDRY and Martha GOLDING. I have always assumed that this is my 4xGGM, though since it was on the old type of wedding register where the father's name is not recorded, I have no proof that this Martha is the one born to George and Elizabeth.

Assuming that the two Marthas are one and the same, I think that she is likely to have died in Whitchurch in 1869, aged 76. This would suggest she was born in 1793, approximately consistent with the known date of birth of my 4xGGM.

There are certainly at least two George Cowdry's, one of whom possibly married my 4xGGM.

What started out as a simple hunt for missing census entries has become much more complicated. Suggestions as to a way forward would be welcomed.

I think that the Martha who died in 1869 is more likely to be the third(?) wife of the George who died in 1867. And that in 1851 she was the widowed Martha Butcher living in Overton.

I've only come across one possible child of George and Martha, nee Golding, and that was the William baptized in Overton in 1820 (and who probably died as an infant)

The George in Andover may have been married to another Martha
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:N68B-S2H

There is a possible baptism for him in Andover in July 1806. He died in 1838, age 32 on the new death index.

As you say, it is getting extremely complicated :)
Which child of George and Martha are you particularly interested in?
