William Mitchell and family, Sussex

Postby DianaCanada » Sun Jul 14, 2019 2:56 pm

Would love any help offered to help find this family:
William Mitchell and his children, living in Burwash, Sussex in 1871. The family was there in 1861 as well, with his wife Mary, b. ca 1843, Warbleton, Sussex and daughter Harriett age 2, b. Dallington, Sussex, and William was born in Dallington, as well.

By 1871 William, an Ag Lab, b. 1837/39, was a widower with three children, George William b. Set 1861, Emily b. ca 1865, and Alice b. ca 1868; all three children born in Burwash. I cannot find Harriett and she might be the one who died in Battle district, age 15, in 1874 (her bp and William's, Dallington, is in Battle district but Burwash is in Ticehurst district).

Mary, William's wife, was Mary Funnell, b. Jun 1843, daughter of John Funnell and Elizabeth Harriet Message. Looks like she was just 15 when she married William (Mar Q 1959) and probably pregnant with Harriett. She died, as Mitchel, in Jun 1870, Ticehurst district, age 27.

Cannot find civil registration for the three daughters, just George William. There is an Ann Mitchell registered in the Jun Q Battle district, mother Funnell. Possibly Harriet?

I have checked later censuses and the US and Canadian censuses but no luck.
Thinking they might have gone to Australia or NZ, but wondering how a man of his limited means could have afforded that (sponsored, perhaps?) but a lot of people in Sussex did emigrate to Aus/NZ.

Possibly. Bizarrely, there is a Harriett Funnell with the same reference (June '59, Battle 2b 40), but not the same person!

Ianbee, thank you for your help. I will look this over later and see if there are any hints as to the fate of the children.

I think these are my family members, thank you again, Ian.
Still not completely sure about Harriet's death, but she might have been employed as a servant in Dallington when she died, or living with other Mitchell relatives there.
Still on the hunt for the fate of George William, Emily, and Alice. Their mother certainly had a large family of siblings, but have not found them with any of them in later censuses.

Hi
Possible bad news about George William.
Digress, he was baptized in Dallington with those names the other way round, 4 Aug 1861
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... K-BG?i=543

We know he was born in Burwash (registered Ticehurst), but, anyway, in the Battle Union workhouse in 1881 is a George Mitchell, 19, born Dallington. Patient.

A death registration
June 1881 Battle 2b 38
Mitchell, George
age 19

And the workhouse register of deaths has it on 19 June
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903 ... cat=693319

It does say he was admitted from, and buried in Ashburnham.
Can't say for sure it is the right George, but it must be a possibility.
