The Flu that Killed 50 Million

Quite a disturbing programme, but interesting.

At least 50-100 million died in the Spanish flu of 1918/19 – 10 times as many as in the Great War. It was called the Spanish flu not because it came from Spain, but because of censorship (watch the programme!). The flu in fact originated in Kansas, and came to Europe with the American troop ships.

I have never seen a flu related death in my tree, but I guess they should exist in the 18/19 time window.

My maternal grandmother got the Spanish flu and was given the last rites but recovered, otherwise I would not be here!. Shocking that the head medical officer of health refused to order posters to tell people how to avoid it because he thought it might affect the war, so thousands died because of his decision!.
