Kew lookup request (24th regiment c1785)

Postby MoVidger » Sat Jun 22, 2019 7:01 pm

If anyone is heading to Kew this summer, I would be extremely grateful for lookup assistance please.

In 2017, Adrian kindly offered suggestions with my soldier ancestor brickwall, with a trip to Kew being my only recourse. Unfortunately, I'm not geographically able to travel to Kew this year.

I need a search for my John Worrel in the following General Muster Books and Pay Lists:

24th Foot 1st Battalion - WO 12/4059 (1760-1782)
24th Foot 1st Battalion - WO 12/4060 (1783-1798)

I've no idea when or where John Worrel, attested (or transferred?) to the 24th Regiment. The only record I have for him is his marriage record on Scotland's People:

01 Feb 1785 - Edinburgh
John Worrel (24th Regiment of Foot - Edinburgh Castle)
Hannah Hume (spouse's father: John Hume of Cupar)

John and Hannah's son (John) indicates a birthplace of Glasgow in the 1851 census for Dundee. In April 1785, the 24th embarked at Glasgow for Drogheda - but was John still with them in Ireland?

According to Chapter 5 of the Historical Records of the 24th Regiment, "Inspection of the Regimental Muster Rolls and War Office Marching Books of this period (c1782) suggests a hopeless condition of the recruiting market". Of course John Worrel could have enlisted prior to 1782, and therefore have served in America with the 24th.

FYI: There are FMP military service records for two John Worrell's who served with the 24th - both of which I've eliminated:

John Worrall/Morrall - born 1779 in Youghall, Cork, Ireland (he's too young)
John Werrell - born 1747 in Hayfield, Derbyshire (he didn't join the 24th until June 1787)

Many thanks, in advance, if a kind forum member can perform my lookup request of the MB & PLs mentioned above! :D

I will be at Kew in the next two weeks so I don't mind looking him up.

Many thanks, Junkers! Hopefully the records will indicate something to help narrow down his origins, and/or contain discharge details. He seems to exist only in the 1785 marriage record. In case it helps, John is listed as "gamekeeper, deceased" in his son's 1860 death record.

I had a look for John Worrell at TNA. According to WO 12/4089 he was stationed at Winchester in the period from 25 March 1783 and was discharged on 17 May 1783. Document WO 12/4060 says he was in Colonel General William Taylor's Company at Drogheda (Ireland) as a Private, then between April and June 1785 at Armagh, the record for July-September is missing. Between October and December 1785 he was at Monaghan, the record for January-March 1786 is missing. Beween April and June 1786 he should have been at Galway but was on furlough, between July-September 1786 he was at Killaloe and the record for October-December 1786 is also missing. So he spent most of his time stationed in Ireland, there are no details of his occupation, date or place of birth.

I can probably rule out John serving in North America prior to 1783. According to the Historical Records of the 24th Regiment book, the 24th service companies returned from America in July. As he was stationed at Winchester in March 1783, he could've been one of the new recruits from the New Forest area, or from one of the depot companies from Tamworth or Old Windsor.
