Royal Marines records

Recently The National Archives (TNA) announced that volunteers and TNA had indexed the attestation and discharge records in Admiralty series of papers ADM 157.

Whilst this was a worthwhile project, it is riddled with many errors on the places of birth and in my view the cataloguing should be taken with a large pinch of salt. Examples are men said to have been born in "Monmouthshire, Scotland", one man born in St Kilbert's (which does not exist) in Edinburgh and another born in "Inverness, Musselburgh, Edinburgh".
