Eleanor has a birth certificate which states that Lillie is Dickson and Alice is calling herself Dickson and the father is Robert Dickson.

Ian has found birth registration Sep 1894 Portsea 2b 454 Dickson, Lillie Euphemia Alice mother Andrews. Lillie went by the name Alice and married Thomas Alves in 1919 in Portsmouth. Her father on her marriage certificate is Robert Dickson deceased who was noted as a stoker with the Royal Navy.

Ian has a Robert Dickson born in 1873 in Tweedmouth to Robert Laing Dickson and his wife Euphemia nee Briggs.

I think that in all likelihood Robert Dickson was around at the time of the birth regulation - I just do not think Alice would have included the name Euphemia for any other reason than it was Robert's mother's name.

A question to the collected expertise- Do any of the major databases allow you to search the 1939 register by first name/birthdate?

I spotted a Lillie Mary Harris in the 1939 register with a birth date of 28th July 1894, which I very much doubt is your lady, but it just set me thinking that this would be a nice tool to have.

Yes, you can do it on either one. I think you can even search on date of birth with no name!
