FindmyPast, change of terms and conditions.

Postby Mick Loney » Wed Aug 29, 2018 6:20 pm

Just received an e-mail from findmypast about their new terms and conditions, which in effect means all the records I accessed when I had a subscription, will no longer be available to view without a current subscription.

I am lucky, in that I always download images, so it won’t affect me much, but for those relying on accessing their images via Findmypast in the future, be warned, Download them now whilst you still can!

Good advice.

I have always downloaded every image, every PDF and copied every text result. That way, even if the website becomes dead, deceased and an ex-website, I've still got everything.

It's also highly useful to mark them up with something to say where they came from. I have numerous directory pages where I've decided that I need to investigate further but haven't the faintest where the first one came from.

I always tried to download images as I went along, especially the important ones, but there is a lot of images over the years I never downloaded for one reason or another, probably because I thought, mistakenly, that I could access them at any time for free! At least with Ancestry I knew to download them from the start. Now I have a bit of a daunting task to make time for. The lack of notice (a month if not less) is a little devious, a few months would have been more helpful. I made this point when I contacted them about it. They seem to think that this is enough notice and made the point that this change is in line with other websites. Oh well, if this change is in line with other greedy websites already making massive profits off the family historian then that is perfectly acceptable!! I know its not the end of the world, but it is a little annoying especially as I have always rated FMP as being one of the better websites for customer service. Ancestry is pants for customer service, but it seems FMP wants to be just like them.

Findmypast and newspapers.

Newspapers are now only available with the top subscription, now called "Pro" (previously called World).

British newspapers were previously available with the British subscription, but the renamed "Plus" subscription does not contain newspapers.

Cheers

I would consider that more than a bit yuk if I only had a British subs. :( However, the cynic in me has to say that I'm not surprised - the relation of the BL's British Newspaper Archive to the same content in FMP (albeit with a generally poorer search routine in FMP) has always seemed to represent a commercial risk to someone.

I have a British subscription still, I was advised w hen they made the change that as long as I left auto-renew on (which I don’t particularly like doing) I would keep the same access. In fact it renewed last weekend and I’ve not logged in since (away visiting Ypres and the Somme) so must check later today

Phew...

Sounds like it's important not to accidentally leave and rejoin then.
