Help chasing birth records

Postby angeljayne » Thu Jul 12, 2018 10:39 pm

Hi I am new to finding my family history but already I have come across a problem. I have minimal information on my granddad and can only find his marriage and death. I can't find his birth registered. Can anyone offer a newbie some suggestions on how I might find it please

Many thanks

Was he adopted, or born out of wedlock?

If you try giving us as much detail of what you know so far, we can try finding it for you, or offer advice of where to look.
Despite knowing my own grandfathers extensive details, I have not found his birth registration, but luckily for me, I knew him, as well as his father, so even without a birth certificate, it hasn’t caused a brickwall. :D

If you have his marriage, you know what father's name and occupation was given on the certificate. This is the first step in finding his birth. Names of marriage witnesses can sometimes be useful.

Thank you for your advice.
My granddad was called Joshua Richards. Born 19.5.1907 in Bradley. He died 11.6.1980 in Walsall
He married Elsie Maud Westwood on 1.4.1929. He was a moulder. His father was called Harry Richards and their witnesses were Phoebe Jones and Ernest George Clements.
As far a i know he wasn't adopted or born out of wedlock, but who knows.

Any advice would be appreciated

Many thanks jayne

The only Joshua Richards that I can find about this time is

RICHARDS, JOSHUA JOHN - Mother's maiden name GOUGH
Sep Qtr of 1909 in BIRMINGHAM Volume 06D Page 116

This doesn't tie in with birth day given on death certificate or 1939 register

But both the 1939 Register and the GRO death index give the date of birth of Joshua Richards as
19 July 1907
